For those who are wondering how an election recount would occur, according to State Statute an automatic recount occurs if the difference between the highest number of votes cast in the election and the next highest number votes cast is less than or equal to one-half of one percent. If this occurs, the cost for the recount would be paid by the City. If a recount is to occur, the County must complete it within 28 days following the election.
If a recount is not required based on the above criteria, any interested party, including an eligible elector or a candidate for office or the issue committee for a ballot issue or question, may submit to the designated election official a written request for a recount at the expense of the interested party making the request. This request shall be filed with the designated election official within seventeen days after the election. An estimated cost to the requesting party would be between $10-$12k for the recount.
Please understand that, at this point, the current votes are not official and could change. Currently, the County has approximately 50 ballots for our area that could change the vote number. There is a mandatory 8-day grace period to include any other provisional ballots or signature verifications.
